 Analysis of Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema (1975) - Laura Mulvey :

                                                     

             In the movie "Pen Adimai Ellai "was a female oriented movie  released on 6 December 2013. Actress Bhumika plays the role of heroine named Indira and Actor Prakash Raj as Gautham. At the beginning Indira was very happy because she scored first class in MBA at the same time Gautham cracked IAS examination. Indira's and Gautham were family friends, Indira wants to help poor farmers from the dangerous factories because these factors will spoil the cultivation lands. Indira's father decided her marriage with Gautham without her permission at that time Indira losses her hope and made her to prepare herself as a homely girl . They got marriage at the very first day he and his family revels their true color, they always treat boys like king and women as a machine or slave. Gautham was totally against her wishes he behaves her in a very rude manner , even his parents supports Gautham's character but also Indira stays calm herself, she was forced to do all household works etc. Gautham was a very cunning and a true collector so he got transfer to Coimbatore she asked him that she needs to come with him but he refused her need and he moved on. Some weeks later he ordered her to come back to him immediately according to his wish she came back. He told her that he needs a boy baby and her forced to get pregnant finally she became pregnant, he informed his parents that be prepare to became grandparent's to my little prince. But she gave birth to a baby girl so he refused to hold his baby and get out from the room he shout at her like animal, scolding that she is responsible for the gender determination, within two years she was literally forced to get pregnant and she again gave birth to a baby girl, therefore he and his family were very angry at Indira blaming her that even she is not worth to give birth to a baby boy. The doctor advised Indira to do family planning operation but she refused to do this without her husbands permission with one month he got transfer to Madurai and he asked her to be with him, literally she is physically and mentally weak but he forced her to get pregnant even she disagree with his opinion , without her permission he forced her with means marital, after the delivery of her second baby within 3 months she again get pregnant so her doctor advised her to do abortion but she disagrees finally she gave birth to a boy baby. Gautham and his family jumps with happiness he always take care of his son and every time he ignores his daughters, this continuous every day she controlled her anger and feelings she berried her aim and goal within herself. One day she came to meet her she realized that she had wasted simply 8 year for this slave life. So she decided to do protest against all husbands who treat their wife as a slave she make a women's club which was against all men's who treat women as slave or thing. This protest made a great impact on Gautham's mind he realized his mistakes and seeks apology to her.

BECHDEL TEST :

A way of evaluating whether or not a film or other work of fiction portrays women in a way that is sexist or characterized by gender stereotyping . To pass the Bechdel test work must feature at least two women , these women must talk to each other, and their conversation must concern something other than a man is known as a Bechdel test.

"The Bechdel Test '' was inspired by cartoonist Alison Bechdel's 1985 tongue-in-cheek comic strip 'he Rule ' which became a basic measure to see if women are fairly represented in a film. It's is also referred to as the Bechdel-Wallace test Alison credited the idea for the test to her friend Liz Wallace .

The 3 questions asked during a Bechdel test are 

* Are there at least two named female character?

*Do they speak to each other ?

* Do they speak to each other about something other than a male "love" interest ?

To pass a Bechdel test one should follow the following rules

1. It must have at least two female characters 

2. They must both have names 

3. They must talk to each other about something other than a man 

Bechdel Test imperfection don't diminish its importance , but they do open the possibility that different films should be measured by other metrics 

The test is simple and sets the lowest bar for meaningful female representation , but the Bechdel test isn't a feminist Litmus test , or not a definitive analysis of whether a film is good or bad. Rather its way to recognize patterns that the industry upholds which isn't synonymous with sexism or feminism.

Frozen(2013) , Chicago(2002), children of Men (2006) are movies have passed the Bechdel test .
